The home porch serves from a humble to grand comfort. The Victorian Era porch served as one social and comfort status. The "porch" to the common man afford the same creature comforts as equals. However the "well to do" afford the additional size and elegance.

Near Westside Neighborhood Snow

Some photos of the back streets of the historic Near Westside Neighborhood in Elmira, NY.

 These homes are located on W. Gray Street. West Gray is located between Prominent Church Street and Prominent Water Street.

 West Gray Street runs East from the 1831 court house, West to Wall Street. Judge Gray's estate stood at the end of Gray to the West. The home is still there but has houses and a neighborhood also now.

Gray St is a heavy multi-unit neighborhood and street. The East end is not without problems to say the least.

Painting an old home circa 1858. Painted in oil. This home is primed with an oil base primer "Alkyd". This primmer stabilizes and allows finish paint to be latex. If the previous oil paint is not neutralized the latex will NOT stick.

Scrape, wash (by hand with dish soap the best), check scraping after wash. Prime and calk as needed (best to put primer over calk) Also extra wear and tear and heavy pealing may be double and or triple coated.

We have many unique Palladian Windows in the Historic District of the Near Westside Neighborhood. I am going to attempt photograph the styles that are in our national historic district. Here is a fine example at 362 W. Gray Street. circa 1870 and built by Jackson Richardson.

Near Westside Neighborhood "Clinton House" c 1896 530 Water Street Elmira, NY

A High Victorian Home in the Near Westside Neighborhood nationally registered historic district located in Elmira NY. Victorian homes Near Westside Neighborhood the ”Arthur Clinton House” 530 Water Street Circa 1896 This house is a Pierce and Bickford home. Pierce and Bickford were the High Victorian Home quality architects of their day. This house is classified as a Neo-Classical style home. Let me say that the definition of Neo-Classical means a mixture of styles. This home is Neo-Classical Queen Ann. Arthur Clinton WHO? Arthur Clinton moved to Elmira from Galeton, Pa in 1892. In 1898 he formed a corporation with Frederick Baker and Steven Rose known as Rose, Kimball and Clinton Enterprises. This company was as we know RKB in Elmira NY. In 1898 it was considered a heavy hardware. This translates to railroad tracks and like. HEAVY! Arthur Clinton purchased his lot from John Hoffman who’s circa 1832 home sits next door. Arthur Clinton was vice president of Merchants National Bank. In 1927 when Arthur Clinton died, he left his home to his four children. The Arthur Clinton house is an outstanding example of Victorian Architecture in the Near Westside Neighborhood. Mark Twain in Elmira’s historic district. Near Westside Neighborhood The Near Westside Neighborhood has been known to host Mark Twain many times. Mark Twain visited prominent homeowners in our nationally registered historic district. But he was known as Samuel Clemens, or Mr. Clemens. When you where young, you always addressed him as Mr. Clemens. However if you had some familiarity with him and where of age, you could address him as Samuel. Mr. Clemens was friendly with the Waters, Pratt, Finch, Slee, families of West First Street. These families are within two blocks of the great Langdon Mansion. Located at Church, Main, and First Streets. He often visited the Langdon Mansion. Also located in the neighborhood of West First Street was a small cigar manufacturer. This opens also the possibility that on his many walks, (pondering) he also could have visited this establishment. He visited many more High Victorian Homes in the historic neighborhood. The Near Westside Neighborhood while Mark Twain summered here, was the fashionable neighborhood of its time. Boosting some of Elmira’s finest and modern up to date homes of the era. The Near Westside bordereds the Western end of the city of Elmira. This was the new city section. It grew from the Eastside of Elmira to the edge of the Near Westside Neighborhood.
