Circa 1896
This house is a Pierce and Bickford home. Pierce and Bickford were the High Victorian Home quality architects of their day.
This house is classified as a Neo-Classical style home. Let me say that the definition of Neo-Classical means a mixture of styles. This home is Neo-Classical Queen Ann.
Arthur Clinton WHO?
Arthur Clinton moved to Elmira from Galeton, Pa in 1892. In 1898 he formed a corporation with Frederick Baker and Steven Rose known as Rose, Kimball and Clinton Enterprises. This company was as we know RKB in Elmira NY. In 1898 it was considered a heavy hardware. This translates to railroad tracks and like. HEAVY!
Arthur Clinton purchased his lot from John Hoffman who’s circa 1832 home sits next door.
Arthur Clinton was vice president of Merchants National Bank. In 1927 when Arthur Clinton died, he left his home to his four children.
The Arthur Clinton house is an outstanding example of Victorian Architecture in the Near Westside Neighborhood.

Near Westside Neighborhood
The Near Westside Neighborhood has been known to host Mark Twain many times. Mark Twain visited prominent homeowners in our nationally registered historic district. But he was known as Samuel Clemens, or Mr. Clemens.
When you where young, you always addressed him as Mr. Clemens. However if you had some familiarity with him and where of age, you could address him as Samuel. Mr. Clemens was friendly with the Waters, Pratt, Finch, Slee, families of West First Street. These families are within two blocks of the great Langdon Mansion.
Located at Church, Main, and First Streets. He often visited the Langdon Mansion. Also located in the neighborhood of West First Street was a small cigar manufacturer. This opens also the possibility that on his many walks, (pondering) he also could have visited this establishment.
He visited many more High Victorian Homes in the historic neighborhood. The Near Westside Neighborhood while Mark Twain summered here, was the fashionable neighborhood of its time. Boosting some of Elmira’s finest and modern up to date homes of the era.
The Near Westside bordereds the Western end of the city of Elmira. This was the new city section. It grew from the Eastside of Elmira to the edge of the Near Westside Neighborhood.

The Christmas Season takes on a life of its own. One thing quickly realized is the ladder or ladders are an important part of the Christmas must have. For example the FRONT DOOR.

Near Westside Neighborhood Victorian Homes "The Fire Place"
The Victorian fireplace was a source of warmth for the family and their servant help. Ah yes… the help. An important part of the Victorian fireplace. In the Victorian period was to forms of fireplaces. Wood and Gas.

The wood fireplace has been around as long as mankind has needed warmth. In the early fall or late spring, one can reminisce to the hickory romantic aroma of a fireplace warming her mantle for the evening. The wood fireplace is still warmly enjoyed even today!
The GAS fireplace
Oh what a modern improvement and luxury the Victorian had. Instant HEAT! JOY JOY. This modern convenience was well also enjoyed by “the help”
Ah yes the help. Let’s reflect on the fireplace and her servant… The wood-burning fireplace after use was a smelly mess. Not to be left ideal and ignored. You know one had “the help” to take of this task. This task in the season was an extra chore for the servant(s). Toting the logs in the ash and remains out was continues through the day. Starting extremely early in the morning. Starting between 4-5 AM.
The workday for the bank clerk at the Chemung Canal Bank began 6 AM sharp till 5:30. Side not on this fact. A bank clear in 1860 was allowed one half hour for lunch. However all work is to continue. How is that for some perspective? Take lunch don’t stop working.
I digress.
Today the collector seeks the Victorian fireplace out. Often sold by the homeowner, many have traveled to live a new life in a new home. We wish them well and hope they enjoy their new surroundings. This causes anguish but …it happens.
As I continue on the blog journey I will be sharing the fireplaces of Elmira, Elmira’s historic district homes and like.

The Near Westside Neighborhood has many long term wonderful residents. This can quickly be spotted by their well kept homes.

The Near Westside Neighborhood, a nationally registered historic district, is one of the larger of her kind. Boosting the largest concentration of Victorian homes and architecture. The architecture of the Near Westside is truly remarkable.Also the City of Elmira's architecture.

The Near Westside Neighborhood has many long term wonderful residents. This can quickly be spotted by their well kept homes.
On the other hand it is and has been very apparent on properties that are owned by out of and in town landlords and very poor managers.
Not ALL out of townees are bad such as the recent group headed by Bill Newjent and his team. They have done some real property improvements to the middle class apartment buildings in the district.Thank you Mr. Newjent.
In up and coming blogs we will show many before and afters of his apartment bldgs which are manly in the Near Westside Neighborhood's national historic district.
The Near Westside Neighborhood is in the Western portion of the City of Elmira, NY.
Bordered by historic Hoffman Street on the West.
The city proper on the East side.
Near Elmira College on the North side, and the Chemung River on the South Side.
You can see the neighborhood sites in the center of Elmira, NY's rich historical heritage center. This neighborhood should have more of a high priority than it currently has by the city and others.
YES the Near Westside Neighborhood does have her share of crime activities. This is a highly densely populated area of apartments in these once grand ol mansions. Because the Near Westside Neighborhood has an identity it is easily marked in the LOCALE public eye. BUT the neighborhood is slowly changing course to sail to smoother, quitter, clear blue waters.

Victorian homes in Elmira, NY
I have learned over the past 20 years all of the ins and out of Elmira NY Victorian and historical dilemmas. Some turn out to be great tragedies. While others turn out to be very successful.
Elmira, NY does have people move here all the time from different states. Some are from Elmira originally and others just want to leave the big city life are in.
Recently many old Victorian homes are being rehabed here in our City. We have new owners of these homes in Elmira's national historic district know as the "Near Westside Neighborhood"
This home has been recently purchased and plans are to be open again as one of Western NYS premier B&B's Located in the historic Near Westside Neighborhood.
Here is a photo two doors to the West (formerly the Grand Spectacle) with new owners within the past three months. Hired by a local physicians group from Illinois.
This very High Victorian Home has been purchased in the spring with continuing renovations. See the inside here! 
Now this home has new owners. No info YET! But I do see the dumpster. New owners within the past 4 months.
This is a taste of the past few months of new Vic home owners in the historic district. Our historic district keeps many tradesman at work. And has done so for a century and a half. More soon. Make a donation to HistoricNearWestside. com TODAY!
